Giraffe Overview
The Giraffe is the tallest land animal on Earth and one of the most recognizable wildlife species. Native to Africa, giraffes are known for their extremely long necks, long legs, and unique spotted coat patterns. Every giraffe has a different pattern of spots, much like human fingerprints.
Adult giraffes can grow up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall and weigh as much as 2,800 pounds (1,270 kg). Their height helps them reach leaves high in trees that other animals cannot access. They mainly feed on acacia leaves, twigs, fruits, and flowers, making them herbivores.
Giraffes live in open grasslands, savannas, and woodlands across parts of Africa. They are social animals and usually move in loose groups called towers. Despite their peaceful nature, giraffes can defend themselves with powerful kicks that may injure predators such as Lion.
Female giraffes usually give birth to one calf after a pregnancy of around 15 months. Newborn calves can stand and walk within hours of birth.
